Smashing the Window

Britain in the 1960s, 70s and 80s (mostly): Cultures, Counter-Cultures, Politics, Representations

About this site

Welcome to Smashing the Window. I started this site in October 2005 as a forum for exploration of British culture, society and politics during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.  I maintained it as a blog between 2005 and 2010 while I was researching and writing my PhD. The blog element is now on hold – I am not currently adding to it and new comments are disabled – but it may become ‘live’ again in the future.

To explain the name: Smashing the Window stems from the original title of my PhD proposal. One of my primary concerns is the conflict between those who, during what Arthur Marwick called the period of ‘cultural revolution’ in the ‘long Sixties’, sought to ‘smash the window’ and those who were more concerned with ‘changing the window dressing’. This is a phrase of mine, dating from 2005, which I will be using in the future (because I’m rather proud of it). Therefore, please note that everything I write and have published on this blog and linked pages is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivative Works Licence. Follow the link to read the terms and conditions but, at its very simplest, this Licence means that should you want to quote me anywhere you must credit me as the author and this blog as your source.
